When I was a younger writer my protagonists didn't pay so dearly for their drinking. 'My hero, Winnie Barlow, pays for his drinking in a serious way. They have had to anesthesize themselves against the rigors of the job. His hero is a drunk, as are many of the cops who police Wambaugh's novels.Īsked if cops really drink so much, he said, 'The ones I write about usually do. The plot involves a former cop, his romance with a wealthy widow and what appears to be a murder. Unlike his previous seven novels, 'The Golden Orange' does not deal with the constabulary directly. 'You've got to get out there and mingle with the populace,' he said. 'Some individuals in Newport Beach are claiming either to be the characters or know who the characters are. 'People in the communities don't get upset about how I portray their city or themselves,' he said.
